After the cyclone, preparing for future threats in Mozambique

After Cyclone Idai swept through Mozambique’s coastal city of Beira and surrounding districts, widespread flooding increased the risk of waterborne diseases. Within a week of the disaster, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) began working with the Ministry of Health to rapidly contain an outbreak of cholera in the area. Teams are also looking ahead to anticipate future threats. In this interview, Dr. Tomas Jensen, tropical medicine advisor for MSF, talks about what's likely to come next—many more mosquitoes that carry diseases like malaria and dengue fever. This knowledge gives us time to prepare and help protect people in the affected areas.
