Mumcy Msibi lives in Eswatini, which has the world’s highest prevalence of HIV. When she learned that her husband was HIV positive, she went to a Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) clinic and began pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which prevents infection in people at risk of HIV.
"I did not waste any time, I just rushed to MSF and I was given PrEP. I started taking it then," she says. "My entire family knows as well. I am doing very well with my PrEP."
MSF is integrating self-care, including PrEP, as part of a patient-centered approach to health care by providing people with the knowledge, skills, and tools to participate in their own health care while still having access to formal health services when needed.
